Boxing Day completes first half of the season
Liverpool are at Burnley this evening for our Boxing Day game and it’s a game that brings us to the half way stage of the season. When the final whistle blows on this game, we will have played every other one of the teams once.
Whatever happens today, we will move into the second half of this season in the relegation positions but not quite as badly placed as we might have been just a few games ago. Without storming into any great form, we have won two and drawn one of our last five games bringing seven points to the four we’d won in the first thirteen games.
There is so much more to do if we are to stay in the league and we know that anything we can get today will be a bonus against the team who currently sit second in the table having lost just one game this season, that at Spurs back in September.
With neither team having held press conferences since their games last Saturday, there is nothing available in the case of injuries that might have been sustained in those games.
In this shorter than usual preview, we can just report that Vincent Kompany said last Thursday that all of Jack Cork, Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson and Aaron Ramsey were all close to a return although none of them were in the squad for the game at Fulham.
Liverpool do have some injuries. Andrew Robertson and Joel Matip have long term injuries and are ruled out and all of Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Alexis Mac Allister are doubts. Also both Luis Díaz and Kostas Tsmikas came off injured during Saturday’s draw against Arsenal.
The respective teams last Saturday were;
