Select Group referee John Brooks will referee our FA Cup sixth round tie against Manchester City tomorrow at the Etihad Stadium.

It will be just the second occasion that Brooks has refereed a Burnley game; he was in charge of our 0-0 draw at Wolves last season in the Premier League.

Brooks, from Melton Mowbray, became a national list referee as recently as 2016, refereeing a League Two game between Blackpool and Exeter on the opening day of the 2016/17 season. It was a season and a half later before he refereed for the first time in the Championship, taking charge of the Reading v Burton game two days before Christmas 2017.

He was promoted to Select Group 2 ahead of the 2018/19 season and three years later made the step up to the Select Group which led to him refereeing for the first time in the Premier League for the Wolves v Burnley game in December 2021.

It was one of three top flight games he refereed last season but this season has seen him take charge of eleven to add to four Championship games, four in the League Cup and two in the FA Cup. In those 21 games, he’s shown 81 yellow and two red cards.

Of those yellows, 36 have gone to home team players and 45 to away team players. He sent off Bolton’s George Thomason in a 5-1 League Cup win against Salford in his first game this season and on Boxing Day he dismissed Blackpool’s Jordan Thorniley in a 1-1 draw at Hull.

He fell foul of his bosses at PGMOL last month while on VAR duty for the Premier League game between Brighton and Crystal Palace, wrongly ruling out a Brighton goal for offside having misjudged the images. He was subsequently removed from VAR duty for his next two games.

His most recent game was that between Bournemouth and Liverpool last Saturday. Bournemouth won the game 1-0 and had both goalscorer Philip Billing and Jaidon Anthony yellow carded alongside Liverpool’s Ibrahhima Konate.

Fourth official tomorrow is Anthony Taylor; his last Burnley game was our 1-0 home win against Wolves in April last year. Andy Madley will be on VAR duty and he last refereed Burnley in March 2021, a 1-1 home draw against Leicester.
