It wasn’t to be for the under-23s. Needing a win at Peterborough to win a place in the last sixteen of this season’s competition we were beaten 5-2 by the Posh.

Things looked to be going the home team’s way with Lewis Thomas having to make two big saves before they went in front midway through the half with a goal scored by Andrew Oluwabori.

But we turned things around with two goals in six minutes. Dara Costelloe (pictured) got the first with a neat finish after good work from Ne-Jai Tucker and Joe McGlynn with McGlynn taking advantage of a defensive mistake.

That was seven minutes before half time but Peterborough were level within three minutes  with Joseph Taylor scoring and the same player scored again to give them the lead early in the second half.

There was to be no response this time. They won a penalty just past the hour. Charlie O’Connell saw his spot kick saved but hit home the rebound.  That was four and goal number five came from another penalty with O’Connell this time not requiring any second opportunity.

The result has taken Peterborough to the top of the group and they will proceed into the Round of Sixteen with Sheffield United while Everton and ourselves go out of the competition.

The Burnley team was: Lewis Thomas, Finlay Armstrong, Harry Williams, Jake Rooney (Dane McCullough 65), Owen Dodgson, Kade Ratchford (Sean Etaluku 69), Mark Helm, Ben Woods, Ne-Jai Tucker, Dara Costelloe, Joe McGlynn Subs: Lukas Jensen, Dan Sassi, Will Hugill.
