Eddie Howe has swooped to strengthen his defensive options with the loan capture of Manchester City’s England Under-21 defender Ben Mee.

The 21-year-old Mee is from Sale and City is his first club. He had his first success when he captained them to the FA Youth Cup in 2008, beating Chelsea in the final. He scored in that final too. Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge in the first leg, City fell 1-0 behind in the second leg with Mee getting the equaliser before they went on to win 3-1.

He’s a member of City’s Elite Development Squad but last summer went on tour to America with the first team and got games against Portland Timbers and New York Red Bulls.

A much awaited first competitive game came soon after in last season’s Carling Cup when he was named in their starting line up for a tie at West Brom. He acquitted himself well despite the 2-1 defeat.

City can’t be the easiest team to break into for a young player and so he had to go out on loan to get first team games. He was snapped up by his former manager Sven Goran Eriksson who took him to Leicester for the second half of last season. He made fifteen appearances for the Foxes which included one against Burnley on the day they beat us 4-0 at the Walkers Stadium in April.

Ben has also broken into the England set up and has played for his country at under-19, under-20 and more recently under-21 level. He made his under-21 debut against Germany in Wiesbaden last November, coming on as a substitute for Jack Rodwell.

He was also in the squad for the friendly in Italy in April, this time getting a start but giving a penalty away three minutes from time that gave him a red card and Italy the only goal of the game. That was the day Jay Rodriguez made his England bow and, like Jay, he was named in the provisional squad for the Euro Under-21 Championships recently but, again like Jay, missed out on the final squad.

Ben is now looking to further his career with some more first team experience and will spend the 2011/12 season at Burnley.

Ben made his Burnley debut against Sean Dyche’s Watford on the opening day of the 2011/12 season as Burnley lined up: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, Andre Amougou, Ben Mee, Danny Fox, Wade Elliott (Keith Treacy 64), Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Ross Wallace, Martin Paterson (Charlie Austin 45), Jay Rodriguez. Subs not used: Brian Jensen, David Edgar, Marvin Bartley.

He’s gone on to play on 352 occasions for Burnley and has, for the last two seasons, been club captain,
