Burnley in the air – destinations Portugal and Poland
The first team squad are off to Portugal tomorrow for a six day training camp on the Algarve while the under-23s will also be heading for the airport and their destination is Poznań in Western Poland.
Virtually the entire first team squad will be on the flight with most of the internationals returning. Tom Heaton, Kevin Long, Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady, Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson and Matěj Vydra were all given a week extra having been involved with their respective countries but they will join the rest of the squad with Nahki Wells, having played in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for Bermuda, given a further week off.
As yet there has been no news of any incoming transfers so we will have to wait and see whether any happen in time for new players to join up with the squad in Portugal, a squad which includes Jimmy Dunne, who spent last season with Hearts and Sunderland, Ali Koiki, who was at Swindon in the second half of last season and was on the subs bench once for our first team, and Josh Benson; he made the bench last season for the Premier League game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
For the first time in some years, this is just a training camp and we won’t be playing a game out there that supporters can go and watch which has been the case previously in Ireland, Austria and Switzerland.
Manager Sean Dyche has been pleased with the players on their first week back. “The lads are looking in good shape, which is always a plus,” he said.
He added: “Pre-season is there for a reason and that’s to get them fit, but it’s always nice when they come back well because you can then look to fast track things. It’s also a more traditional pre-season than last year, when we had the Europa League to prepare for. It gives the players a more familiar plan of where we are going building up to the first game, and that involves six weeks of ramping things up, where everything is meticulously planned.”
The travelling squad for Portugal is: Tom Heaton, Matt Lowton, Charlie Taylor, Jack Cork, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson, Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes, Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Ben Gibson, Steven Defour, Ashley Westwood, Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon, Phil Bardsley, Matěj Vydra, Kevin Long, Nick Pope, Adam Legzdins, Dwight McNeil, Jimmy Dunne, Ali Koiki and Josh Benson.
The under-23s do have a game to play on their trip; they face Pogoń Szczecin II next Saturday. A year ago there were a number of new signings for the under-23s but so far this summer the only addition is Joel Senior (pictured) from Curzon Ashton.
Senior will make the trip and it has been reported that Norwich goalkeeper Jon McCracken will be there as we take a look at him. Norwich signed the 19-year-old from Hamilton three years ago and was their regular under-23 goalkeeper last season. However, today’s speculation is that Newcastle could be set to make a move for McCracken.
The under-18s will be playing some pre-season games domestically before travelling to Prague for the CEE Cup. We’ve been placed in a group with Palmeiras, Altinordu and Slavia Praha who we play on the 24th, 26th and 27th July with all three games to be played at Stadion Evžena Rošického.Share this page :
