Busby looking to get back on top of refs list
Oxfordshire referee John Busby will referee our game tomorrow against Wigan Athletic and it will he his first ever time taking charge of a match at Turf Moor.
He’s refereed is just once before; that was at Coventry back in October when we won 1-0. His performance that day earned him the top place on RATE THE REF with a rating of 82 out of a hundred but he lost that top place to Matt Donohue who went ahead of him following our last home game against Huddersfield.
Busby, who has also refereed one Wigan game this season, their 1-1 home draw against Bristol City in August, joined the National List in the summer of 2016, entitling him to referee games in the lower two divisions of the Football League.
Promotion to Select Group 2 came in 2021 and now into his second season he’s refereed sixteen Championship games this season with six in League One, one in League Two and one League Cup game. In those 24 games there have been 87 yellow and three red cards. Of the yellows, 38 have gone to home team players and 49 to away team players. The only player he’s sent off in a Championship game is Hull’s Oscar Estupinan in a 0-0 draw at Millwall.
Busby’s most recent game was the 0-0 draw between Preston and Coventry a week last Tuesday. Preston’s Liam Lindsay was yellow carded along with the four Coventry players Callum Doyle, Josh Eccles, Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyökeres.
Fourth official tomorrow is Anthony Backhouse. Still to referee a Burnley game, tomorrow will be thr third time he’s been on fourth official duty at a Burnley game this season.
