By George – young team wins at Palace
We might well go out of the Premier League Cup at the group stage but we are not going out without a fight and an incredibly young team are now on their way home with a first victory of the season in the competition having beaten Crystal Palace 1-0 with a Mitch George goal around eight minutes from time.
Let’s put this performance and result into perspective. The under-23s have lost so many players in the last few weeks as one by one they departed for other clubs on loan. Not only were we without them today but also missing were Oliver Younger, Jimmy Dunne, Ali Koiki, Mace Goodridge, Henri Ogunby and Joel Mumbongo as well as 16-year-old striker Lewis Richardson.
Twenty-year old goalkeeper Lukas Jensen was in the line up along with central defender Bobby Thomas who celebrated his 19th birthday last Friday. Alongside them as we kicked off were seven second year and two first year scholars.
Palace, admittedly, weren’t at full strength either, but for us to go there and get a result is a fantastic achievement by these young players.
Max Thompson, recently signed from Everton, was the only player to get a shot on target in the first half but we stepped things up in the second half and we were the better side. Thompson again, Ne-Jai Tucker and Thomas all came close before George (pictured) won it for us when he turned the ball home after Edon Pruti had headed down a corner.
It’s still going to be a big ask to get through in the competition but that should take nothing away from this performance and result from an incredibly young team.
