Clarets and Liverpool go East
Roger East will referee our Premier League game tomorrow against Liverpool at Anfield and this will be his first Burnley game since the 3-0 win at Charlton in May last year and his first Premier League game with the Clarets since we lost 2-0 at Southampton in March 2015.
Although now into his fifth season as a select group referee, he’s still not the most used of officials in the Premier League. Last season he refereed just 11 Premier League games and tomorrow will be just his second this season. His one game so far was the Bournemouth v Watford game and alongside him with one game are Stuart Attwell and newly promoted Chris Kavanagh while Paul Tierney is set for his first game tomorrow at West Brom.
He did, though, manage to keep the players on the pitch at Charlton in that final day of the season game when he could so easily have suspended play and even abandoned the game given the protests from the home fans.
Besides the game at Bournemouth, he’s also refereed two League One games and one Championship game this season. In those four games in total there have been 16 yellow cards and one red card with five of the yellow cards going to home team players and eleven to away team players.
The red card came in his last game, QPR’s 2-2 home draw against Millwall on Tuesday this week. He yellow carded QPR’s Nedum Onuoha and Luke Freeman while Millwall had all of Jordan Archer, Conor McLaughlin, Shaun Williams, Steve Morison and Ryan Tunnicliffe yellow carded as well as seeing Lee Gregory sent off.
Millwall were not happy with the red card with manager Neil Harris claiming the challenge was: “A yellow card at the very most.” He added: “Lee is feeling very aggrieved. He’s not that sort of player to even make tackles, let alone malicious ones. Some of their players couldn’t believe it.”
Hopefully, we don’t get anything similar tomorrow.
The assistant referees are Harry Lennard (East Sussex) and Mick McDonough (Northumberland). The fourth official is Mike Jones (Chester) whose last Burnley game was the 2-2 home draw against West Brom, one of five Burnley games he refereed last season.
