Clarets fourth after draw against Fleetwood
While the first team were at Newcastle last Saturday, the under-21s took on Fleetwood at Gawthorpe in the Professional Development League, our first meeting with them following their step up to Category 2 ahead of this season.
We led with a Tom Tweedy goal and looked set to win the game until a late Fleetwood equaliser. Even then we had the opportunity to win it but Joe Westley, a player who has been so reliable for us in front of goal this season with nine in league and cup, failed from the penalty spot.
The result has seen us drop one place to fourth in the table with Sheffield Wednesday moving back ahead of us into second place having won 3-0 at second place Birmingham, although they are seven points behind leaders Sheffield United who, having dropped points in the previous week for the first time, were back to winning ways with a 3-0 home victory against Hull. That win for Wednesday saw Bailey Cadamarteri score twice and he’s now the league’s clear leading goalscorer.
The league continues to remain tight other than top and bottom with Sheffield United so far clear at the top and Peterborough, still without a point having gone down 4-2 at Barnsley, six points adrift at the bottom.
It’s so much tighter in the south group where second played host to top, that was Millwall v QPR. Prior to the game, we were the only team that QPR had dropped points to but this one ended 2-2 and that’s allowed Bournemouth, who won at Colchester, to get within striking distance of them.
Bottom team Cardiff were beaten 5-2 at Ipswich and remain one point behind Colchester. The game of the week, however, was the one between Swansea and Watford which ended all square at 4-4.
This week is cup week for a number of teams in the Premier League Cup and that includes us tomorrow when we play our home game against Brentford. This game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and will be played at Chorley’s Victory Park.
There is just one league game between Wigan and Crewe next Wednesday and, as a result, our next review will be in two weeks time.
The player featured this week is winger Basilio Rieno Socoliche who joined us during the summer from Crystal Palace.
