Our under-23s have won a penalty shoot out this afternoon at Gawthorpe against Barrow following a 0-0 draw and it’s won us a quarter-final tie against Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Senior Cup.

It was the last of the first round ties to be played and, like the under-18s last week in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup at Preston, it went to penalties.

With Barrow going first, the first three penalties for each side were successful. Offrande Zanzala, James Jones and Robbie Gotts scored for the visitors with Owen Dodgson, Finlay Armstrong and Michael Mellon, who had failed from the penalty spot during the game, scoring ours.

It then went our way. Josh Galloway missed for Barrow and Jake Rooney followed up to give us a 4-3 lead. And then Sam Waller (pictured) saved Festus Arthur’s spot kick to ensure the win with no need to take our fifth penalty.

The Burnley team was: Sam Waller, Finlay Armstrong, Bobby Thomas, Jacob Bedeau, Anthony Glennon (Ethen Vaughan 70), Dara Costelloe, Dale Stephens (Jake Rooney 70), Ben Woods, Owen Dodgson, Michael Mellon, Joe McGlynn. Subs not used: Harry Allen, Harry Williams, Calen Gallagher-Allison.
