It’s going to be a busy day tomorrow at the Football League with the release of the 2021/22 fixtures and the draws for both the League Cup and Papa John’s Trophy.

The League Cup draw is for the first round which rules us out but we’ve also missed out on having an under-21 team playing in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Up the Clarets understands that we were keen to take part but that the sixteen places for Category 1 academies are available to those clubs who have finished in the highest places in the previous season in terms of their first team which left us needing one of the sixteen clubs who finished above us to decline.

That’s not been the case for next season and so Everton, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle and Wolves will go into the eight northern groups while Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Tottenham and West Ham will join the eight southern groups.

It leaves us with our Premier League 2 fixtures while it is likely that the Premier League Cup will return next season giving us, if it is the same format, a minimum of a further six competitive games.

The League Cup draw will be at 3:40 p.m. while the Papa John’s group draw comes at 4:30 p.m. with both to be screened live on Sky Sports.
