Going into today’s game against Barnsley on the back of successive wins, the under-21s couldn’t make it three and fell to a 3-0 defeat against the team who kicked off next to bottom of the league.

The one big positive for the Clarets came with Taylor Harwood-Bellis playing for the first time since he sustained an injury in the FA Cup at Bournemouth over nine weeks ago. Vincent Kompany had confirmed he needed a couple of games at this level and he played the first half of the game.

We were 1-0 down at the break with Aiden Marsh having given Barnsley an early lead. They scored twice more in the second half, Jordan Helliwell doubled their advantage just past the hour and five minutes later Luke Thomas scored to complete the scoring.

Hull, who kicked off the day ahead of us on goal difference, have won 2-1 at Peterborough to go three points clear in second place.

The teams today were;

Barnsley: Adam Hayton, Barry Cotter, Trialist, Jordan Helliwell, Robbie Cundy, Rudi Pache, Harrison Nejman, Jon Russell, Fabio Jalo, Luke Thomas, Aiden Marsh. Subs: Jamie Searle, Kareem Hassan-Smith, Charlie Hickingbottom, Emmaisa Nzondo, Danny Benson.
