The two teams without a point in the U18 Professional Development League both got off the mark on Saturday with Wigan, one of those teams, preventing Burnley from moving further up the table.

With us having a young team out again, we were held to a 0-0 draw at Gawthorpe by bottom team Wigan who must have thought they’d moved away from that bottom place with this first point of the season, only to find that they remain behind Peterborough on goal difference with the Posh also claiming their first positive result with a 2-2 draw at Sheffield United.

At the top end of the north group, Birmingham dropped points for the first time. Having won their previous six games, they were held to a 2-2 draw at Hull and then held again against Colchrster two days ago in an outstanding north v south game. They lead the league by seven points with Hull one of three sides in that next group along with Sheffield Wednesday, who were surprisingly beaten at Coventry, and Barnsley, who had a big 4-0 win at Fleetwood. Barnsley, of those three, are in the strongest position with two games in hand on Birmingham.

The draw has seen us drop to eighth in the table. Coventry were the team to move ahead of us with their 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

In the south group, Bristol City march on at the top. They’ve only dropped two points from one draw in their eight games but they were big winners this time round, beating Colchester 7-2. Charlton remain second having beaten Millwall. They are eight points behind Bristol City but they, like Barnsley in the north group, have two games in hand.

Cardiff are off the bottom. They followed up their big win at Bournemouth in the previous week, their first win of the season, with a 2-1 home victory against Ipswich. That result took them above Colchester and QPR although Colchester went back above them with their draw at Birmingham. QPR dropped to the bottom with defeat at home to Bournemouth although they conceded just four goals this week, losing 4-2.

We travel to take on the league leaders Birmingham this Saturday when only the north group have games.

The player featured this week is first year scholar, defender Ben Jordison.
