With three games to go, the under-21s are going to probably have to pull out three big results if they are to have any chance of making the top two in the table and the end of season play-offs.

We now sit in sixth place, a point behind both Hull and Coventry, the latter having played a game more, but we are four points adrift of second place Wigan. Barnsley have now gone above us on goal difference and we also have to keep an eye on Crewe who sit one place below us with a game in hand and only one point fewer.

Our opponents Colchester are next to bottom in the south league and are unlikely to climb any higher with them eight points behind Charlton who are in the position above them. However, in their last game, they did win 3-2 at play-off chasing Hull while drawing their most recent home game against Barnsley.

During our three previous seasons in the Professional Development League, we three times played at Colchester. In the 2017/18 season, they beat us twice, 3-0 in the Premier League Cup and then 1-0 in the league.

The game against them in 2018/19 was at home when two goals from Rob Harker and one from Ben Woods gave us a 3-0 win but our last meeting came in the 2019/20 season we were 2-0 in no time, firstly when Ali Koiki scored after the home goalkeeper could only parry a Harker shot. Lewis Richardson doubled the advantage before Colchester came back to score twice to earn a point.

Only Richardson remains at Burnley from the team that day which was: George McMahon, Ryan Cooney, Jimmy Dunne, Bobby Thomas, Anthony Glennon, Tunde Bayode, Josh Benson, Adam Phillips, Ali Koiki, Rob Harker, Lewis Richardson. Subs not use: Kai Calderbank-Park, Jordan Cropper, Oliver Younger, Christian N’Guessan, Joe McGlynn.

Today’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Colchester’s Community Stadium. Admission is £5 for adults and £3 concessions.
