Coote has the whistle to start the season
It’s the first match of the season tomorrow with Brighton & Hove Albion the visitors to Turf Moor and David Coote will be the referee who gets everything underway with that first whistle of the season.
It’s almost nine years since he first refereed us and tomorrow will be his thirteenth Burnley game and the eighth in the Premier League. That first game, at the beginning of October in 2012, was the 3-3 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday that proved to be our final home game under Eddie Howe’s management. Dean Marney received a yellow card that night as did Wednesday’s Jermaine Johnson.
He refereed two more games last season to take his total to 28 games in which he showed 95 yellow and three red cards. Of those yellows, 50 went to home team players and 45 to away team players. The three players he sent off during last season were Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace), Matt Doherty (Tottenham) and Thiago Silva (Chelsea).
His fourth official tomorrow is Martin Atkinson whose only Burnley game last season was the home defeat against Manchester City. Jarred Gillett is on VAR duty. The Australian has been appointed to the select group this season. He hasn’t previously refereed a Burnley game but has been on VAR at Burnley games during last season.
