Cup action at the Turf this afternoon
Burnley travel to Accrington in two days time for a League Cup tie, but this afternoon, at the Turf, Burnley will face Bournemouth in the Premier League Under-23 Cup.
This competition was introduced in the 2013/14 season as an under-21 competition and we had a superb run all the way to the semi-finals. We beat Wigan on penalties, Crewe, Sunderland, Bolton and Exeter before going out 3-2 to Manchester City in the semi-final with our goals coming from Cameron Dummigan and Jason Gilchrist. Dummigan is one of only two players who featured that night still at the club; Tom Anderson being the other.
I’ve only seen us lose once more in this competition. Hull beat us in the first game in the next season but last season, having been beaten by Wigan and Barnsley, supporters were refused entry for in the next round against Blackburn.
Changes to the structure of football below first team this season has seen the introduction of Premier League 2 for those clubs with EPPP Category 1 academies. This league is an under-23 rather than an under-21 league and the Premier League Cup has followed the same path. This means we can field three outfield players over the age of 23 today along with an overage goalkeeper.
With the League Cup tie at Accrington likely to be used to give members of the first team squad some game time, it remains to be seen how much experience we have in the team today.
Kick off this afternoon is 2 p.m. and admission charges are £4 adults and £2 concessions although it is free entry to season ticket holders on presentation of their card.Follow UpTheClarets:
