Cup takes us to Ewood
Our under-23s are back in Premier League Cup action this afternoon with what, in the old Central League days, used to be referred to as the mini-derby against Blackburn Rovers.
We go into the game in second place in the four team Group G of the competition. We’ve drawn both of our previous games against Middlesbrough, 1-1 at Bishop Auckland, and Crystal Palace, 2-2 at Gawthorpe, while today’s opponents sit top of the group having beaten both of those teams 3-1.
At first team level, we might be seventh in the Premier League while you have to go all the way down to the bottom half of the Championship to find today’s opponents , but they do have a long established Category 1 academy and are currently playing at under-23 level in Division 1 of Premier League 2 where they sit ninth of twelve teams. This week, while we played Crewe, they were up against Benfica where they followed up a 2-0 defeat against Hertha Berlin with a 2-1 loss against Benfica.
Andy Farrell is expected to continue in charge of our team today who will be captained by Anthony Glennon (pictured) who said yesterday: “We are going really well this year, there is a great atmosphere around the place and hopefully we can keep the unbeaten run going.
“We do take our games one by one, as they come, but we have always had this one in the back of our minds. It’s a massive game, a cup game and a derby at a stadium, so all of those things come into account in the build up to it.”
The game kicks off at 1 p.m. today at Ewood Park. That is the correct information so take no notice of our opponents reporting that it is a 7 p.m. kick off at Leyland. The game is all ticket and there are no sales on the day.Share this page :
