Mike Dean will referee our game at Brighton today and he is very definitely no stranger to the Clarets. It will be the 24th time he will have refereed us in the Premier League and his 46th Burnley game in total since he took charge of our home game against Bournemouth in the 1997/98 season.

Results have been mixed as have performances although probably some of his lesser performances came in the earlier days, notably at Bradford City in 2002, although he had something of a nightmare four season ago in our defeat at Southampton.

Today will be the first time he’s refereed us this season but there were five Burnley games for him last season. We lost the first two, at Arsenal and then at home against Manchester United, won the next two against Bournemouth and Watford, both at home, and then his most recent Burnley game was the 1-1 draw against Wolves right at the end of last season. That he was referee for both the Bournemouth and Watford games means he’s refereed both our home wins since the 2-1 victory against Leicester back in January.

It’s an away game today though and they haven’t been quite so frequent. The away game at Arsenal was the only occasion last season while in 2018/19 season he took charge of our 0-0 draw at Leicester and the 2-1 win at Huddersfield, the night he sent off both Christopher Schindler and Robbie Brady to take his Premier League red cards to 99.

That total of Premier League reds has now reached 105 which has gone up by one this season. Today will be his sixth game of the season, all of them in the Premier League to date. In the first five of them there have been a total of 16 yellow cards and one red card. Of those yellows, there have been eight shown to both home and away team players. The one player he sent off was West Brom’s Kieran Gibbs in their 5-2 defeat at Everton; that was a clear red card.

HIs most recent game was Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Manchester United last Sunday. Both teams picked up three yellow cards. They were Harry Maguire, Fred and Mason Greenwood (Manchester United) along with Arsenal trio Gabriel, Rob Holding and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

John Brooks will be the fourth official tonight, he’s a referee still to take charge of a Burnley game. Michael Oliver is on VAR duty. He was with us as recently as eleven days ago for the home game against Spurs.
