1718 burnley dean marney 00 500x500Having been released by the Clarets at the end of last season, it looked as though Dean Marney was going to sign for Nottingham Forest but he’s actually spent part of the pre-season training with Aston Villa.

Both of those Championship clubs have missed out on him though with Marney today linking up again with former team mate Joey Barton and signing a two year deal at Fleetwood. Barton will be his manager now but back in January 2017 it was Barton who took his place in the Burnley team after he suffered a cruciate ligament injury at Arsenal.

That proved to be Marney’s last ever first team game for Burnley, the last of 221 league and cup appearances having signed from Hull in the summer of 2010 after both clubs had suffered relegation from the Premier League.

It took some time for him to be accepted by some Burnley fans but went on to become a big crowd favourite. That’s something I’m sure he can do at Fleetwood having signed a two year deal today. I think he’ll be a terrific signing for the League One club, the second former Claret to sign for Joey, following Chris Long who signed for them last week.
