Mike Dean will referee this evening’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers and right now he’s making more Turf Moor appearances than some of our players.

Dean was referee for the penultimate home game prior to lockdown, the 3-0 win against Bournemouth, and was back for the 1-0 victory against Watford when Turf Moor staged its first behind closed doors game.

Today will see him referee us for a 23rd time in the Premier League. Results have been mixed with him over the years and there have been some poor performances along the way. There have also been some very good performances from him which is why he’s top of the RATE THE REF table with a rating of 82.08 out of 100.

Unlike him, he’s had a quiet time recently with his yellow card. In that home game against Watford, the only player carded was Dwight McNeil. He’s refereed two games since which both again brought just one yellow card. He carded Leicester’s Çaglar Söyüncü in their 1-0 FA Cup defeat against Chelsea and in his most recent game, Bournemouth’s Jefferson Lerma saw yellow in their 5-2 loss at Manchester United.

Those three cards have taken his total for the season to 121 in 29 games with 63 to home team players and 58 to away team players. His most recent red card was in a Wolves game; he sent off Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury in their 0-0 draw at Molineux.

Tonight’s fourth official is Matt Donohue. Promoted to the Football League ahead of last season, he’s still to referee a Burnley game. That’s not the case with Kevin Friend who will be on VAR duty. He’s in the middle this Saturday at Norwich and his last Burnley game was the defeat at Chelsea in January.
