1718 burnley u23 team v crystal palace 1000x500Burnley’s under-23s have been beaten 2-0 this afternoon by Crystal Palace in the opening game of the Professional Development League season, our first at this level.

It was an inexperienced Burnley team that travelled to Beckenham with none of the first team squad included, but it wasn’t quite the same for Palace who included Damien Delaney and Yohan Cabaye with James McArthur, more than once linked with a move to Burnley, coming on at half time for Cabaye.

There were no goals in what appears to have been a reasonably even first half but it was Palace who edged in front after the break and this soon after we’d nearly broken the deadlock only for Khius Metz to be denied by a superb save from Dion Henry.

Andre Coker hit the bar for Palace but five minutes later then were in front with a good finish from Sam Woods, and Burnley’s hopes of a comeback were ended two minutes from the end when McArthur curled a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

The under-23s are next in action next Monday when Ipswich are the visitors to Turf Moor with a 1 p.m. kick off.

The teams were;

Crystal Palace: Dion Henry, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Sam Woods, Damien Delaney, Michael Phillips, Nya Kirby, Yohan Cabaye (James McArthur ht), Levi Lumeka, Sullay Kaikai (Kian Flanagan 68), Jason Lokilo (Giovanni McGregor 84), Andre Coker. Subs not used: Oliver Webber, Tyrick Mitchell.
