Defeat sees youths drop back in league
Despite taking an early lead from the penalty spot last Saturday, the under-18s fell to a 2-1 defeat in our first ever U18 Professional Development League meeting with Fleetwood.
Lucas Wane (pictured) netted from the spot but it was a game that left coach Tony Philliskirk disappointed with the second half, which he described as controversial, and also our second half performance, claiming that we always seem to lose when we get sucked into this type of game and Fleetwood went on to win it with goals from Theo Butterworth and Liam Roberts in the last twenty minutes.
The result saw us drop one place in the table, back to ninth and with only the pointless pair of Peterborough and Wigan below us. The drop came because of Barnsley’s win against Wigan that saw them leapfrog but us and Sheffield United.
Sheffield United were beaten at home by Birmingham who continue to boast a 100% record with five wins from five games. On the other side of the city, Crewe won at Sheffield Wednesday and that’s moved them above Wednesday into second place in the table.
In the south, Bristol City kicked off the week’s games on Friday with a win at Coventry but for the first time this season, in their sixth game, they conceded a goal, two in fact but they won the game 3-2. It was the only south group game played and they now have a six point lead at the top although Watford, in second place, do have a game in hand.
The south, other than that one game, had a week off but both groups are in action this weekend with a full fixture list. Coventry take on Barnsley tomorrow but the other nine games will all be played on Saturday, including our trip to Crewe.
