Defenders win the day in Turkey
Six days ago we returned from Turkey with a 0-0 draw against İstanbul Başakşehir in our Europa League 3rd qualifying round game and it was a night in which the defenders were very much on top.
The two central defenders were in outstanding form and on this occasion it was captain Ben Mee who came out on top, winning both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.
Mee was in superb form and full deserved to receive 38% of the vote for the man of the match, a figure only as low as that because of the performance of James Tarkowski alongside him; he was second with a 23% share. Debutant goalkeeper Joe Hart took third place with 14% while left-back Charlie Taylor came fourth with 9% of the vote.
The player rating result was very similar with the same top three followed by the other full back. Mee and Tarkowski were way ahead of the rest; Mee won it with a rating of 7.81 followed by Tarkowski who scored 7.44. Again Hart was third with a rating of 6.89 while 6.64 out of 10 won Phil Bardsley fourth place.
That result has given Mee the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Tarkowski has collected six points, with four points for Hart and one each for Bardsley and Taylor. It means Mee has joined Sam Vokes in second place, just one point behind current leader Jack Cork.
