Away from league action, our under-21s play the first of four games in the Central League Cup this afternoon.

As previously reported, we are in Group B in the competition, one of four groups. A and B both have five teams while there are just four in C and D. We’ve been grouped with Accrington, Blackburn, Preston and Wrexham and, as things stand, we are the only team in the competition still to play.

Three games have been played in our group. Back in September, Accrington beat Wrexham 4-1 and last Tuesday those two teams both won, Accrington beating Blackburn 5-2 and Wrexham recording a 2-1 win against Preston.

Two of our four games have been moved to new dates and we will now play Preston at home on 19th December (previously scheduled for 27th February) and we travel to Accrington on 21st February rather than on the original date of 21st November. The Wrexham game, like Preston to be played away, remains on 26th March.

Today, it’s Blackburn, and we take on a team who haven’t had the best of starts to their season in Premier League 2. The league no longer has two divisions and they currently sit in 23rd place in the 26 team league with one win and one draw from their six games. There have been goals in their games too; their 4-0 defeat at Spurs had a lower number of goals than any other game they’ve played. Other defeats have come against Chelsea (1-6), Aston Villa (2-3) and Manchester United (2-5). They’ve drawn 3-3 at West Brom and their one win was a 4-1 victory against Leicester.

We currently sit fifth in the north group of the Professional Development League with three wins and three defeats in our eight games.

Today’s derby clash kicks off at 1 p.m. at Gawthorpe but the club have confirmed that the game is being played strictly behind closed doors.
