Last Friday we missed the chance to go back to the top of the league when we lost at Barnsley and a home defeat against Middlesbrough three days later all but knocked us out of the Premier League Cup.

That’s the not so good news for our under-23s but it has been a really good couple of weeks for the team, or several members of the team, who have been able to get out on loan and play some first team football, five of them in the Football League with three League Two clubs.

A draw at Barnsley would have seen us edge ahead of Nottingham Forest but we were beaten heavily and, had we got something, we’d have still been top with Forest losing 3-2 against Wigan last Tuesday, this after leading 2-0 at half time.

It leaves Forest still above us on goal difference with two games in hand and our second place is very much threatened with Leeds just one point behind and also having two games in hand. Forest play again this afternoon against struggling Sheffield United but neither us nor Leeds are in action in the next week although Leeds do have a Premier League Cup tie. Our next league game comes a week on Monday at Leyland when we take on Bolton Wanderers.

In the south, Watford still lead the way but Coventry, in dropping points against Cardiff, missed the chance to move within one point of the leaders. They are now three points behind Watford with two games in hand.

The player featured this week is Jimmy Dunne who has been back with the squad recently having had his loan at Fleetwood ended.
