With Burnley trailing 2-0 against Aston Villa on New Year’s Day, Danny Drinkwater stepped up to come on as a substitute only to see Chris Wood pull a goal back and then find himself being sat down again.

That signalled the end of a Burnley career that had totalled a League Cup appearance against Sunderland and one Premier League outing against Manchester City that lasted around an hour. Sean Dyche had got somewhat tetchy about him following recent questions; he would only suggest he was available for the FA Cup tie before confirming last Friday that he would be returning to Chelsea.

In recent weeks there has been speculation that the player would be moving to Aston Villa on loan and that’s been confirmed today. Out of the reckoning at Chelsea, he’s trying to resurrect his career. That wasn’t helped at Burnley because of an incident away from the club but he’ll now be hoping to give Villa a boost in their bid to keep out of the bottom three.
