Michael Oliver will referee our game tomorrow at Crystal Palace just three weeks since he last refereed our home game against Tottenham Hotspur when he didn’t have the best of games.

That Spurs game was his second Burnley appointment this season; the other was the home game against Crystal Palace and so he becomes the second referee this season to referee home and away fixtures against the same team with Roger East having been in charge of both fixtures against Liverpool.

Ahead of that Spurs game three weeks ago, I reported that we’d seen Oliver have a couple of difficult Burnley games early in his career. I suggested that he’s now a much better referee than he was then but that he was still prone to having problematic games and he’d had one in his previous game at Watford.

There’s no doubt there was some real concern over his handling of that Spurs fixture. Although soundly beaten in the end, should he have sent off Del Alli in the opening two minutes and, having not, should he have giving him a second yellow card for simulation rather than fall for his theatrics and give Spurs a penalty? Needless to say, Match of the Day didn’t bother to show our disallowed goal or our own penalty shout in the second half.

How much help should he have been given that afternoon by his assistant Simon Bennett? He’s also with us at Palace tomorrow.

That game brought his RATE THE REF rating down but it’s still 71.55 out of 100 although he’s now dropped behind Lee Probert into seventh place.

He’s refereed three games since, two in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup. That’s 19 domestic games this season in which there have been 70 yellow cards of which 36 have gone to home team players and 34 to away team players.

One of those three games came at Selhurst Park; that was Arsenal’s 3-2 win there on 28th December. His last game was Southampton’s 1-0 win at Fulham in the FA Cup last Saturday. There were two yellow cards in that game. They were Fulham’s former Burnley midfielder Kevin McDonald and Southampton’s Jan Bednarek.

Hopefully, no one will be talking about Michael Oliver getting things wrong after tomorrow’s game.

The assistant referees are Simon Bennett (Staffordshire) and Mick McDonough (Northumberland). The fourth official is Bobby Madley (Ossett) whose last Burnley game was the final game of last season against West Ham.
