Rochdale are our opponents tonight in the League Cup and the tie will be refereed by Geoff Eltringham who will be taking charge of a Burnley game for the first time in almost five and a half years since a 0-0 home draw against Cardiff City in our last promotion season.

That game was his sixth Burnley game. Five have come in Championship games but he was also the referee when we were beaten 1-0 by Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup some seven years ago.

Only one of those games has been away from home; he was the referee on Boxing Day 2015 for our game at Middlesbrough.

From Sunderland, Eltringham has had a busy start to the new season. He’s refereed seven games to date which have seen him show 33 yellow cards and one red card with ten of those yellows coming in one game between Bristol City and Swansea.

Of those yellows, seventeen have gone to home team players with sixteen to away team players. The one player he has sent off is Bournemouth’s David Brooks in their 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest.

Eltringham’s most recent game was the Sheffield United v Preston game last Tuesday. It ended in a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United having both Rhys Norrington-Davies and Oliver Norwood carded alongside Preston’s Emil Ris Jakobsen.

Peter Wright, who has never refereed a Burnley game, will be the fourth official.
