Referees Darren England and Rob Jones have both been promoted to Select Group 1 for the 2020/21 seasons and will now be able to officiate in the Premier League.

Both referees have made their Premier League debuts. Jones was first with the Brighton v Sheffield United game in December while England refereed the Southampton v Wolves game in the following month.

England first refereed in the Football League in January 2015 when he took charge of the League Two game between Wimbledon and Accrington. He was promoted for the following season. His only Burnley game to date was the home game against Sunderland in the League Cup last season. There were no cards that night but we can perhaps get ready to come face to face with the Barnsley based official next season. England already has extensive Premier League experience having officiated as an assistant referee in 69 games during 2012 and 2015.

Jones, from the Wirral, is being fast tracked. It was only in the summer of 2016 that he was first seen in the Football League, starting with Newport v Mansfield in League Two at the beginning of the 2016/17 season.  He’s move quickly and, like England, refereed us in a League Cup defeat, his at Burton in 2018/19 although we’d previously seen him referee a friendly at Preston. More recently he’s refereed us again in the cup, this time the FA Cup win against Peterborough in January of this year.
