David Coote will referee our game this evening at Newcastle in what will be his fifth Burnley game in the Premier League and his tenth game with the Clarets in total.

His first Burnley game was the 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday that proved to be Eddie Howe’s final home game in charge and his next game, at Watford later in the season, was also a 3-3 draw.

Some of his performances in the early games were dreadful and none more so than the game against  Birmingham that kicked off our home programme in 2015/16. That was the day he missed one blatant penalty for us and gave one to Birmingham that baffled everyone in the ground.

It was a big surprise that he was pushed forward but there is no doubt that the Premier League games he’s refereed have shown a remarked improvement and ahead of the Liverpool game, when he had another decent game, he’d lifted his RATE THE REF rating to 64 out of 100.

He kicked off this season with a Nations League game between Armenia and Estonia and has since refereed two games in domestic football, one in the Premier League and more recently in the Championship. His one Premier League game came two weekends ago when he got his yellow card out seven times in Tottenham’s 5-2 win at Southampton. Last Saturday he followed that up with four more in the Millwall v Brentford game in the Championship. Seven of those cards have gone to home team players and four to away team players.

It’s not that long since he refereed at Newcastle. It was his final game of last season when he took charge of the Newcastle v Spurs game four days after our fixture at Anfield. There were five yellow cards in that game and in the previous month he showed his most recent red card at St. James’ Park when he dismissed Sheffield United’s John Egan in Newcastle’s 3-0 win.

At Anfield in July his fourth official was Martin Atkinson and it is the same today. Atkinson hasn’t refereed us since our 1-0 win at Bournemouth last December. The VAR official today is Paul Tierney who was referee for our League Cup game against Sheffield United just over two weeks ago.
