Stuart Attwell has been involved in probably more Burnley games than any other referee since the start of 2021, but all of them have seen him on VAR duty and not in the middle.

Tonight, against Southampton, he will referee us for the first time since he took charge of our 3-1 win at Brighton at the beginning of February 2019. Why it’s been so long between games is hard to fathom.

He’s refereed us fifteen times previously, starting with the 3-3 draw at Manchester City in 2009. Just six of those games have been in the Premier League with his last Turf Moor game coming earlier in that 2018/19 season against Liverpool.

A Premier League referee at 25, he was demoted after a series of poor decisions, although the worst of the lot in awarding a goal in the Watford v Reading game was in the Championship. He returned to the Select Group after over two years away and now referees exclusively in the top flight. He’s not refereed a Football League game since October 2019.

This season, in twenty games, he’s handed out 61 yellow cards and just the one red card. Four of those yellow cards came in the League Cup final at Wembley, of the others, 27 went to home team players and thirty to away team players. The one player he’s sent off is Arsenal’s Gabriel in their 2-1 home defeat against Manchester City.

His most recent game came almost three weeks ago. He yellow carded Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Juan Hernandez (Watford) in a game won 2-0 by Liverpool.

Peter Bankes is fourth official tonight; his only Burnley game this season was the League Cup game against Spurs. John Brooks has refereed just three Premier League games this season. The first of them was our 0-0 draw at Wolves. Tonight, he is on VAR duty.
