First Burnley game for John Brooks
John Brooks will make his Premier League debut tonight when he referees our game against Wolves at Molineux and, at the same time, will be refereeing both Wolves and us for the first time.
It was as recent as the 2016/17 season when Brooks, who is from Melton Mowbray, was first promoted to the Football League. His first game was a 2-0 League Two win for Blackpool against Exeter at Bloomfield Road.
He had to wait until December 2017 for his first Championship game, taking charge of Burton’s 2-1 win at Reading, a day when Burton included both Lloyd Dyer and Marvin Sordell in their starting line up.
The following season saw him join Select Group 2 and last summer he was one of four referees promoted to the Select Group, finally getting his first Premier League game tonight at the age of 31.
He’s refereed seven games this season, five of them in the Championship, one in League Two and one in the League Cup. There have been 23 yellow cards in those games with ten going to home team players and thirteen to away team players.
His most recent game was Blackburn’s 4-0 win against Peterborough, his second game this season at Ewood. There were three yellow cards in that game for Blackburn’s Ben Brereton and Peterborough pair Mark Beevers and Ronnie Edwards.
He has experience on the touchline with Anthony Taylor on fourth official duties; he last refereed us at home this season against Arsenal. Stuart Attwell is on VAR and we are fast approaching three years since he last refereed a Burnley game, the 3-1 win at Brighton in February 2019.
