Our home game tomorrow will be refereed by Craig Pawson and this will be his first Burnley game since he refereed our 3-2 win against the same opponents at Stamford Bridge on the opening day of last season.

Chelsea certainly weren’t very happy with his performance that day and that has often been the case for us when he’s been in charge of one of our games. It’s not the first time he’s sent off two players against us; he did exactly that when he refereed his first ever Burnley league game at Brighton almost seven years ago. That day he dismissed Brighton pair Romain Vincelot and Ashley Barnes in the first 12 minutes.

We’ve had our problems with him with a couple of horror shows, none more so than the home game against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day 2016 when he went yellow card crazy, showing it no fewer than eleven times. The home game against Millwall in 2012 wasn’t much better either. Then there was the 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in 2016/17 season with that late stoppage time goal that should not have been allowed. But, overall, he has done better than in those games because he is currently in tenth place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 64.17 out of 100.

Tomorrow will be his ninth domestic game of the season with six of the eight to date coming in the Premier League. There have been 30 yellow  and three red cards in those games. Of the yellows, 16 have gone to home team players and 14 to away team players. All three players he’s sent off have come in Premier League games. The first was Everton’s Phil Jagielka in their 2-2 draw at Wolves and a week later he sent off Isaac Hayden in Newcastle’s 0-0 draw at Cardiff. The most recent was Leicester’s Wes Morgan in their 4-2 defeat at Bournemouth.

Pawson’s most recent game was in the Championship on Wednesday when Leeds beat Ipswich 2-0. Leeds had Gaetano Berardi yellow carded alongside Ipswich trio Jonas Knudsen, Jon Nolan and Flynn Downes.

The assistant referees are Ian Hussin and Richard West. The fourth official is Lee Mason whose last Burnley game was last season’s 3-0 win at West Ham.
