First Burnley league game in over a year for referee Tierney
Paul Tierney will referee our home game tonight against Aston Villa in what will be his first Burnley Premier League game since the 3-0 win at Watford in November 2019.
He missed a penalty that day and when VAR intervened he was just about to signal Watford to take a corner after play had switched from one end to the other. He’s also the referee who missed that penalty at Huddersfield almost a couple of years earlier when Jeff Hendrick was brought down by the goalkeeper with Tierney incredibly shouting: “No contact.”
That was the first of thirteen games Tierney has refereed this season with all of the other twelve coming in the Premier League. In those games there have been a total of 51 yellow and three red cards. The yellows have been fairly even with 25 going to home team players and 26 to away team players.
Just three days after his game at Burnley, he sent off Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen in their 2-0 home defeat against Liverpool and in December he sent off players in successive games; West Brom’s Matheus Pereira was first to go in a 5-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace and Arsenal’s Gabriel followed in a 1-1 home draw against Southampton.
His most recent game was Liverpool’s 0-0 home draw against Liverpool ten days ago. He came in for a lot of criticism when he blew early for half time with Sadio Mané homing in on goal. He showed three yellow cards in that game with United’s Marcus Rashford joining Liverpool pair Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri.
Fourth official tonight is Darren England; his only Burnley game was the Sunderland League Cup tie last season when he had something of a poor night. Stuart Attwell will be on VAR again as he was for our most recent home game against Manchester United.
