Michael Oliver will referee our home game tomorrow in what will be his first Turf Moor game in the middle since we played Spurs early last season. His only other Burnley game since was the 3-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Oliver is now a very experienced referee having taken charge of his first Premier League game over eleven years ago at the age of 25. That was back in the 2007/08 season for a home game against Scunthorpe; at the time he was just 22.

It was the first game of the 2014/15 season when he first refereed us in the Premier League. He upset Jose Mourinho that night for yellow carding Diego Costa for diving when the striker had been brought down in the box by Tom Heaton. Tomorrow will be his 24th Burnley game in total and the 16th in the Premier League. His 2021/22 season to date has seen him referee five times, twice in the Premier League with the other three in Europe. Those two Premier League games have brought one yellow and one red card. Both came in last Monday’s game between West Ham and Leicester which West Ham won 4-1. He yellow carded Leicester’s R Pereira and sent off his team mate Ajozé Perez.

The red card was met with a strong reaction from Leicester. He was close to the incident and opted to take no action but changed his decision having been invited to take another look by VAR official Darren England.

Oliver’s assistant referee tomorrow is Craig Pawson while Chris Kavanagh will be on VAR duty. Pawson refereed just one Burnley game last season, then 0-0 draw at Aston Villa; Kavanagh’s most recent game was in the final home game of last season against Liverpool.
