The Football League held their annual awards evening last night and while the Championship Player of the Season Award went to Middlesbrough forward Chuba Akpom, there were four of our players and the manager recognised by the league.

A divisional team is selected for each of the three leagues within the league and there were four Clarets in the Championship side with no other club having more than two players included.

The two full backs Connor Roberts and Ian Maatsen were in there along with midfielder Josh Brownhill, who was one of the three nominees for the big award, and forward Nathan Tella. The big surprise from our viewpoint was the exclusion of both Jordan Beyer and Josh Cullen but it is testament to our season that we have had four players included.

It beats the three who won places in the league team seven years ago when we last won this league. On that occasion we had all of Michael Keane, Joey Barton and Andre Gray included with Gray also winning the main award. Those three were also in the PFA team for the 2015/16 season along with goalkeeper and captain Tom Heaton.

The team this season was: Ben Wilson (Coventry), Connor Roberts (Burnley), Anel Ahmedhodžić (Sheffield United), Tom Lockyer (Luton), Ian Maatsen (Burnley), Alex Scott (Bristol City), Josh Brownhill (Burnley), Nathan Tella (Burnley), Iliman Ndiaye (Sheffield United), Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough), Viktor Gyökeres (Coventry).

There was one more Claret to win an award last night and I think there would have had to have been a steward’s enquiry if the Championship Manager of the Year Award hadn’t been destined for Burnley. Nominated alongside Michael Carrick and Mark Robins, the Middlesbrough and Coventry managers, Vincent Kompany was the clear winner of this season’s award.

Congratulations to all five of them for their achievements in this remarkable season.
