A first Football League appearance for Alex Whitmore
A first Football League appearance for Alex Whitmore

21-year-old central defender Alex Whitmore made his EFL (Football League) debut yesterday when Morecambe kicked off their season with a 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Grimsby Town.

With Danijel Nizic and Luke Conlan, two of his former Burnley team mates, named on the bench, Whitmore was giving a starting berth in the centre of the Morecambe defence and played the full ninety minutes of the game at Blundell Park.

It’s a step up for the Geordie who spent last season out on loan at Chester and Gateshead in the National League, making a total of 24 league appearances, five for Chester and nineteen for Gateshead, and scoring two goals for Gateshead.

Josh Ginnelly is the other Claret currently out on loan in the Football League. He joined Walsall last week but had to settle for a place amongst the substitutes as the Saddlers, who made the play-offs last season, got off to a flying start with a 3-1 home win against AFC Wimbledon.

Whitmore, however, was not the only Burnley player to make a league debut yesterday with Jamie Thomas getting his first Scottish League action.

Having made two appearances in the Scottish League Cup, he was named as a substitute for Ayr United yesterday as they kicked off their Scottish Championship season with a 2-0 home defeat against Raith Rovers with Thomas called upon for the last eight minutes.
