Forest back on top as under-23 league resumes
Sunday saw the return of the Professional Development League this week and over a three day period we saw the three other teams in the top four all win as we fell to defeat for the first time yesterday at Nottingham Forest.
The year started with us in first place, followed by Forest, Leeds and Birmingham and it was Leeds who struck first, beating Hull on Sunday afternoon to go second. One day later and Birmingham’s win at Sheffield United took them into third place so when we kicked off yesterday it was against a fourth place Forest although the three points they picked up took them back above Leeds and Birmingham and ahead of us on goal difference to return to the top of the league.
It’s unbelievably close at the top now. Forest, like us, have 32 points while Leeds are one behind on 31 with Birmingham having secured 30 points. Leeds have a game in hand on both us and Birmingham while Nottingham Forest have played one less than Leeds.
Two of those teams, Forest and Birmingham, go first this week. They both play on Friday and should Forest slip up at Barnsley it could see Birmingham go top if they beat Wigan. Monday sees us play our first home game of 2020 against Sheffield United and Leeds are also in action at Crewe.
Leeds tend to play a more experienced team than the other three and we will now be fielding less experienced teams with some of our key players having gone out on loan but it is a fantastic achievement for the current top two to have reached this stage of the season with only one defeat each.
There isn’t much change in the south group. Watford had a big win at Bristol City to remain six points clear of Millwall who beat Colchester yesterday. Charlton were beaten by Ipswich and that’s allowed Coventry to move into third place having won at Cardiff.
The player featured this week is right back Jordan Cropper who stepped back into the team this week after Ryan Cooney moved to Morecambe on loan.
