1617 burnley jon flanagan 01 500x500Two summers ago, just ahead of the 2016/17 season, we signed Liverpool full back Jon Flanagan on a season long loan.

At the time he looked a very astute signing who would certainly provide competition for both Matt Lowton and Stephen Ward as the Clarets went back into the Premier League. He’d been a part of the Liverpool team that had come close to winning the league a couple of years earlier but had subsequently suffered a bad injury.

Even so, he’d returned and impressed Jürgen Klopp sufficiently to earn a new deal and it was thought that he’d get a good amount of game time at Turf Moor. It didn’t quite work out that way and he hardly ever looked likely to take the place of either Lowton or Ward although he did, on a couple of occasions, play well enough as a deputy. He made just six Premier League appearances for us; only three of those were starts.

On his return to Liverpool, he made just one appearance in the League Cup in a 2-0 defeat at Leicester and then moved to Bolton on loan for whom he made nine appearances as they fought, successfully, to stay in the Championship.

Today he’s been released by Liverpool for whom he played a total of 41 times in the Premier League, he last of those games coming at West Brom in May 2016.
