There’s no stopping our under-23s right now in front of goal. A week last Monday they beat Sheffield United 6-0 at Curzon Ashton and followed that up last Monday with a 4-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

1819 burnley dan agyei 00 500x500The latest win, a sixth of the season, saw us go above the Blades who were surprisingly beaten at home by Crewe, although we are no closer to the top three with all of Leeds, Bolton and Birmingham winning their games against Hull, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley.

It’s looking as though it is going to be a close league again this season. Only a couple of weeks ago Crewe were at the bottom, but two wins have seen them move as close as any other to the top five.

The big winners in the last week came in the south group with QPR beating Watford 6-2. That result has moved them up to third in the table. They are five points behind leaders Ipswich but now within a point of second place Millwall who suffered a surprise defeat at home to Colchester. They were beaten 3-2 by the bottom team but it could have been worse with Colchester having led 3-0 at half time.

A week ago, we were the leading scorers in the northern group, behind just Ipswich from the south. Ipswich had a two goal advantage over us but we drew level with them after they won 2-0 at Bristol City. We’ve now been joined by QPR with their six goals taking their total, like ours, to 28 goals.

We play Barnsley this Monday at Curzon Ashton, but a win would see us keeping a close eye on the three teams above us. Leeds, who we can’t catch, are at Crewe while Bolton and Birmingham are at home to the two Sheffield clubs. Birmingham play Sheffield United tomorrow with Wednesday the visitors to Bolton two days later.

The player featured this week is leading goalscorer Dan Agyei.
