The Professional Development League got underway last week with our under-23 team drawing 1-1 at Millwall six days ago in the first game of the season.

1920 burnley anthony glennon 00 500x500A total of nine games were played as the season got underway with Bolton and Leeds from the north group joining Ipswich from the south in waiting until this coming week to play their first games.

On a week when all the games were south v north, Watford had the biggest opening win, beating Hull 5-0 at Vicarage Road. Kane Crichlow scored twice for Watford, one of four players to bag a brace in week one as the search commences to find the league’s leading scorer, won last season by Burnley’s Dan Agyei who signed for Oxford last Saturday.

Coventry were the only other south group winners; they beat Barnsley, while there were four winners from the north with newcomers Wigan leading the way with a 3-0 win at Colchester. Wigan have stepped up this season from Category 3 status, just as we did two years ago.

Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United both had 3-1 wins at Bristol City and Cardiff respectively and it was a 2-0 victory for Crewe at QPR.

Besides our game, there were two other 1-1 draws. Charlton were held by Sheffield Wednesday with Birmingham winning a point at Crystal Palace who fielded the most experienced team of the week. They included Dutch midfielder Jairo Riedewald, who made over 60 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax before joining Palace two years ago, and alongside him were four new summer signings Stephen Henderson, Gary Cahill, James McCarthy and Victor Camarasa.

This week, kicking off tomorrow with two games, it is north v south with Sheffield Wednesday the team without a game. We will play our first home game on the Monday against Coventry and that will be played at Turf Moor.
