Kevin Friend was the referee when we drew 2-2 at Chelsea on Easter Monday last season and he’s back at Stamford Bridge tomorrow when he referees us for a third time this season having already been in charge of the home game against West Ham United and the recent away game at Tottenham Hotspur.

Friend is an experienced referee and tomorrow will be his 12th Burnley game in the Premier League. It will being him level with Jon Moss and Michael Oliver on a total behind only Martin Atkinson and Mike Dean who are some considerable way ahead of everyone else.

His first Burnley game was fifteen seasons ago against West Ham at home and his first Premier League game was also a home game against Birmingham in the 2009/10 season which we won 2-1 with goals from Steven Fletcher and Andre Bikey.

He’s had his poor games, most notably at Leeds on the opening day of the 2015/16 season and more recently in London against Spurs in 2016/17 and last season at Arsenal . His overall performances had given him a RATE THE REF rating of 61.84 out of 100 ahead of this season.

He’s refereed 17 games this season. All but three of those have been in the Premier League with two in the Championship and one of the League Cup. In those games he’s shown 56 yellow and three red cards. Of those yellow cards, 28 have gone to both home and away team players. The three players he’s sent off are Brighton’s Florin Andone in a 2-0 home defeat against Southampton, Villa’s Trézéguet as they lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace and most recently Sean Longstaff of Newcastle in a 1-1 home draw against Wolves.

Although his third Burnley game of the season tomorrow, this will be the first time he’s refereed Chelsea since our game there last season.

Fourth official tomorrow is Select Group 2 referee Gavin Ward. His only Burnley game was on the same weekend seven years ago when we beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at home. Andy Madley is on VAR duty; his last Burnley game was also a 1-0 home win, this one against Nottingham Forest in February 2016.
