Friend back for second game of the season
Having not refereed a game in over a year at Turf Moor until November’s game against Crystal Palace, Kevin Friend is back within two months tonight for our home game against Manchester United.
It’s not the first time he’s refereed a game between us but the previous occasion, almost six years ago, was at Old Trafford when we turned in an excellent performance only to come out on the wrong side of a 3-1 scoreline.
Earlier this season he yellow carded Jay Rodriguez and Matt Lowton in that Crystal Palace win and they are two of 28 yellow cards in his thirteen games this season of which nine have been in the Premier League. Of those yellows, fifteen have gone to home team players and thirteen to away team players.
He’s also sent of two players earlier in the season. He dismissed Brighton’s Yves Bissouma at the end of their 3-0 win at Newcastle back in September and in October sent off Lucas Digne of Everton in their 2-0 defeat at Southampton.
Peter Bankes will be on fourth official duties tonight. Although he’s been on VAR duties at Burnley games this season he hasn’t refereed us since the home draw against Sheffield United last season. Stuart Attwell is on VAR and he hasn’t refereed us in almost two years, since we won 3-1 at Brighton in early February 2019.
