Kevin Friend will referee our game against Norwich City tomorrow. It’s a fixture he’s refereed previously but that was at Carrow Road when he took charge of our final away game of the 2019/20 season.

On that occasion he sent off two Norwich players as we recorded our seventh away win of the season. His next Burnley game was also our next win when he refereed our home game against Crystal Palace last season. He was back for the home game against Manchester United, the game that had an almost seven minute VAR delay, before refereeing two away games, at Spurs and then the final game of last season at Sheffield United.

Tomorrow will be his 18th Burnley game in the Premier League and he’s had his moments and we can only hope he doesn’t make it three out of three at the end of this season at Spurs. He’s already refereed our 5-0 and 4-0 defeats at their new stadium. He did though persuade upset Preston fans to rip up programmes after we’d beaten them 4-3 in 2010.

The Leeds v West Ham game last Saturday was his first Premier League game this season; he’d previously refereed one game in the Championship and one in the League Cup. In those three games there have been nine yellow cards, six to home team players and three to away team players. Five of those cards were at Leeds last week when home trio Illian Meslier, Raphina and Tyler Roberts were all carded alongside Pablo Fornals and Michail Antonio of West Ham.

Tony Harrington is fourth official tomorrow while Craig Pawson is on VAR duty. Harrington, one of the four new Select Group referees this season, hasn’t refereed a Burnley game since the 2-0 home win against Doncaster in March 2014 while Pawson’s one Burnley game last season was the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.
