Burnley’s season comes to and tomorrow against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane with Kevin Friend refereeing one of our Premier League games for a sixteenth time.

It will be his fourth Burnley game of the season. He refereed our first victory of 2020/21 against Crystal Palace at home but more recently has been in charge of the home defeat against Manchester United in January and the defeat at Spurs in February.

He’s previously refereed two Sheffield United games this season and, like tomorrow’s game, they have both been at Bramall Lane. The first of them was their 2-1 defeat against Chelsea in February and he was also the referee for their 1-0 home win against Brighton.

A referee who occasionally drops into the Championship, tomorrow will be his 31st game of the season and in the previous thirty he’s handed out a total of 70 yellow and three red cards. Of those yellow cards, forty have gone to home team players and thirty to away team players.

He sent off Brighton’s Yves Bissouma on the opening day of the season in their 3-0 win at Newcastle and a month later dismissed Lucas Digne in Everton’s 2-0 loss at Southampton. More recently he sent off Craig Dawson as West Ham went down to a 3-2 defeat at Newcastle.

Two of the three red cards have come in Newcastle games and Friend’s most recent game was at Newcastle; they were beaten 4-3 on that occasion by Manchester City. Both teams had two players yellow carded in that game, Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie with City pair Joãa Cancelo and Rodri.

His fourth official tomorrow is Geoff Eltringham while Lee Mason steps into his new role as a dedicated VAR official for the first time. We have to go back to the last promotion season and the 0-0 home draw against Cardiff for the last time Eltringham refereed a Burnley game. What proved to be Mason’s last Burnley fixture was the 2-1 home win against Wolves in November after which Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo said he didn’t have the quality to referee at Premier League level and that Wolves didn’t want him refereeing their games again, and he never refereed Wolves again.
