Game number five for Martin Atkinson
When he takes charge of tomorrow’s home game against Leicester City, Martin Atkinson will referee Burnley for a fifth time this season having previously refereed the home games against West Bromwich Albion, Swansea City and Manchester City as well as the trip to Manchester United on Boxing Day.
He’s progressed all the way to the top, making the FIFA list in 2006 and only recently, back at Manchester City, he refereed his final international between Argentina and Italy.
He’s been no stranger to Burnley games. Tomorrow will be his 21st Burnley game with 15 of them in the Premier League, that’s three more than any other Premier League referee. He’s generally caused us very few problems although in the Boxing Day game this season against Manchester United he did go somewhat over the top with the yellow cards.
He’s refereed 29 games this season and there have been 103 yellow and five red cards. Of those yellow cards, 50 have gone to home team players and 53 to away team players. His only red card since his last Burnley game was that of Charlie Adam in Stoke’s 2-1 home defeat against Everton last month.
There were nine yellow cards in his most recent match, the Manchester derby last week at the Etihad. City had Danilo, Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Agüero and Gabriel Jesus carded alongside United trio Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Romelu Lukaku.
Martin Atkinson is currently fifth in RATE THE REF with a rating of 75.42 out of 100. He’s one of our best referees and that gives you confidence of getting a good performance from him.
The assistant referees are Stephen Child (Kent) and Mick McDonough (Northumberland). The fourth official is Paul Tierney (Wigan) who refereed our game at Watford last week.
