We’ve not seen many referees twice as yet this season but tonight Martin Atkinson will referee a Burnley game for the third time having already taken charge of our games at Everton and Manchester City.

We lost both of those games as we did the only game of ours he refereed last season but that too was against Manchester City. But prior to that we’d won six successive games with Atkinson as referee and hadn’t lost any of nine.

I don’t think we can point any fingers at him for the defeats and likewise I don’t think the opposition could when we’ve won games. Yes, there were controversial incidents in the Everton defeat back in August but that was a lack of support from VAR as much as anything else.

Now aged 50, he’s one of the longest serving Premier League referees. All of his ten games this season have been in the top league and he’s refereed just one Football League game since August 2017.

I those ten games this season there have been 23 yellow and two red cards. Thirteen of those ten yellows have gone to home team players with ten to away team players. He sent off Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka in their 5-0 defeat at Manchester City and, more recently, Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse as they lost 3-1 at Chelsea.

Michael Salisbury is fourth official tonight and he seems to be coming a regular in that role at Burnley games but nothing like Stuart Attwell when it comes to VAR. Although it will be three years in February since he last refereed us, this will be the tenth occasion he’s been on VAR duty for a Burnley Premier League game this calendar year.
