David Coote refereed our opening game this season against Brighton & Hove Albion and then the away game at Arsenal; tomorrow is his third Burnley game of the season when he takes charge of our home game against Aston Villa.

He’s refereed us on fourteen occasions previously and the first two, in the 2012/13 season, both ended in 3-3 draws. The first of those was at home against Sheffield Wednesday when Charlie Austin hit a hat trick and in the next, Charlie scored his last Burnley goal at Watford with Sam Vokes scoring a late equaliser.

His first five Burnley games were all in the Championship and subsequently, he’s refereed us nine times in the Premier League. There have been too many disappointing performances, none more so than the home game against Brighton in 2015. It’s left him 16th in RATE THE REF with a rating of 57.78 out of 100.

Reportedly suspended by PGMOL along with Darren Deadman just hours before the 2017/18 season kicked off, it was late September before he returned while Deadman has never seen the light of day since. By the end of that season, he’d refereed his first Premier League game between Newcastle and West Brom.

He’s referee 24 games this season with only two of them in the Football League. He’s been busy with the cards too; while there have been just three red cards, he’s handed out no fewer than 105 yellow cards. Of those yellows, 47 have gone to home team players and 58 to away team players. All his red cards came earlier in the season. The first was West Ham’s Michail Antonio in a 0-0 draw at Southampton. He then sent off Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as they drew 1-1 at home against Newcastle before, in his next game, dismissing Bournemouth’s Jefferson Lerma in their 2-2 home draw against Coventry.

He’s been busy recently with his yellow card with twenty in his last three games. Six of those came in his most recent game between Everton and Leicester at Goodison Park. Everton had all of Yerry Mina, Richarlison, Dele Alli and Solomón carded along with Leicester pair Kasper Schmeichel and Patson Daka.

Fourth official tomorrow is Craig Pawson who refereed us as recently as last week at Watford while Paul Tierney is on VAR duty; he last refereed us at Brentford.
