Last Thursday, our under-23s won through to the quarter finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup with a penalty shoot out win against Fleetwood Town and this afternoon the under-18s have followed suit with a comprehensive 4-1 win against Oldham Athletic in the Lancashire Youth Cup.

1920 burnley mitch george 00 500x500On a horribly wet  day at Gawthorpe, we went in front early in the game when Mitch George (pictured) turned in a Rhys Fenlon cross and it was close to 2-0 soon after when Jayden Major hit the post from another Fenlon cross.

However, Oldham came back to equalise, then hit the post twice before Ben Woods, almost on half time, rattled the Oldham bar with a shot from the centre circle.

All square at half time but it was Burnley who took command after the break. Cricky Conn-Clarke had a shot tipped onto the post with George there to convert from close range to restore the lead. Fenlon then added a third before George, who has three league goals to his name this season, completed his hat trick and the scoring to take Burnley through.

This was one of three games in the first round. Ten days ago Preston and Fleetwood fought out a 0-0 draw with Fleetwood winning the penalty shoot out 4-3. The remaining game between Blackpool and Bolton is awaiting a date.

Burnley, Fleetwood and the winners of that remaining game will be joined by five teams who received byes in the quarter finals.
