A run of consecutive defeats was ended last week when an own goal from Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow gave us a late equaliser at St. James’ Park but it was the performance of our goalkeeper Nick Pope that was key to us getting that point in a 1-1 draw.

1718 burnley nick pope 00 500x500Newcastle were much the better side in what was a difficult first half for the Clarets, but Pope was equal to everything. He made some good saves, one outstanding save to deny Kenedy with a tip onto the post and then made his first ever Premier League penalty save to deny Joselu. His performance ensured he won him both the man of the match vote and the player ratings.

He polled 44% of the man of the match vote, ahead of Ashley Barnes who took second place with a 20% share. Third and fourth places went to defenders with Ben Mee taking third place with 9% and Charlie Taylor  completing the top four with 7% of the vote.

Pope was the only player to score over eight out of ten in the player ratings, winning it with a rating of 8.05. Three players shared second place with all of Barnes, Mee and substitute Aaron Lennon, who impressed in the last half hour on his debut, winning ratings of 7.19 out of 10.

Pope has, therefore, won the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with Barnes picking up six points and five points for Mee, three for Lennon and one for Taylor.

Being the last game of January, we now have the winner of the Up the Clarets Player of the Month. Previous months have seen it won by Jack Cork and Steven Defour jointly in August, James Tarkowski (September and October), Robbie Brady (November) and Defour (December).

The January winner is Mee who was eight points ahead of Barnes in the five games played in league and cup.

Things have certainly changed as far as the player of the year is concerned with Defour, who currently leads with 93 points, out for the season and likely to see a number of players pass him. Tarkowski remains nine points behind him with Mee, Jόhann Berg Guðmundsson, Cork and Pope also in the running.

You can still vote for the Man of the Match and post your Player Ratings from last Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City .
